It was a scorching hot day last summer at the Northwest Overland Rally when I sauntered past a well-traveled Defender 130 with dual roof top tents and a South African flag on the fender. Overland events are rife with well-built vehicles, but all too few seem to have actually been anywhere of interest. This Defender, covered in dust and wearing the marks of many miles covered, was no show pony. After making a couple curious orbits of the truck, a towering figure appeared with a friendly wave and a cheery, “hello!”

Many of us dream about buying a Land Rover and seeing the world. Graeme and Luisa Bell, along with their two kids, Keelan, 16, and Jessica, 11, actually did it. Since 2009, the family, originally from South Africa, has driven more than 100,000 miles in their 2003 Land Rover Defender 130 diesel. They’ve visited 29 countries, road-tripped across southern and eastern Africa, circumnavigated South America, and driven from Argentina to Alaska and back down to Mexico.

She spoke with an exotic Brazilian American accent and took me partying in Johannesburg one night in her mum’s 1989 110 V8. She drove that beast like a criminal, one hand on the wheel, the other applying make-up.
